i do this on purpose. sort of. i mean, one of the greatest benefits of procrastination is that it saves you from having to do stuff at all -- 'too late' being one of the best excuses for not doing a thing, you know?
and i do this every time. every time, i'll peruse the potluck sign up list and vow to think of something original, and then forget, and then all of a sudden there in the kitchen, tons of food.
me: oh no! i forgot!
coworker: what were you going to bring?
me: i forgot to even sign up! i thought it wasn't today! i was still thinking about it!
coworker: oh, we always have too much food anyway
(yes, i know. it's why i keep getting away with forgetting.) also i'm a hermit that has a spotlessly unbroken record of failing to attend company functions that take place outside of the office. however, they're harder to avoid when they're right here.
so i'll sit here, smelling the food, and wait for someone to pop by my office and insist that i come eat. which i will do, protesting mildly all the way.

*buuuuuuuuuuuurp*
oh man. it's just wrong to eat that much. and there's still this cake.
ow.
and you know, i actually confessed. while they were dragging me out there i said, but i always forget! because you always let me! and they didn't care. *sigh* buncha enablers, is what they are.
Heh. I always volunteer to bring the bread or the chips when the billing office has theirs. No real effort, but they always like the stuff I find. ...and I get *real* food when one happens.
well, problem is even with forgetting there's still WAY too much food. i mean, the entire kitchen is packed.
which is not a bad thing. no, not at all.
I bring shrimp and cocktail sauce. I find that it is something that people ooo and ahhh about, but there is no work involved at all. Slacker. That's me. Yup.
oh, what a great idea! see, i could have wandered around the grocery store endlessly, trying to think up something simple, yet with the wow factor of shrimp.
next time, i swear, i'm not gonna forget potluck day.
however, i make no promises as re: the company picnic.
I say bring rolls - bread is essential - not to mention easy. I would say beer, but that is probably not on the list.
take tuna casserole. nobody EVER takes tuna casserole.
and enablers that feed you??
priceless.
tuna casserole sounds suspiciously like something that needs to be cooked. hmm. probably wouldn't go that far, if i actually do remember next time.
hehehe... You're bad, kd!!! BAD!!! :-)) But I guess since I'm new here, everyone else know that laready :-))
I shoulda gotten here sooner; two different folks have already used the "enabler" word I immediately thought of when reading the post. Day late, dollar short, again (or maybe it's Hawai'i time...).
Really, I just wanted to come check out your new code in the auto subscribe to comments. :-)
The other approach (not that I've ever tried it, really, I swear) is to bring lentil loaf. You will never be asked to bring something again, in fact I think we can be confident that they will start eliminating the whole idea of a sign-up list.
This is just a test. :-)
So, if anyone from the office sees this, what are the odds you'll be able to escape scot-free from the next potluck?
Happy munching!
they don't read this. and i could always say i was kidding. and in some ways i was kidding you know, i really would rather be the sort of person to bring the truly awesome dish and impress everyone.
except i'm not a cooking person, so, well, that contributes to my forgetting. it's easy to forget something you're bad at doing anyway.
Did you ever know that you're my hero, kd? LOL Go and eat! I'll bet there's some awesome good food out there right now. ;)
Woman, you crack me up!
Enjoy the potluck...no one will ever know you didn't bring anything if you don't mention it.
